Oscar de la Renta

OSCAR DE LA RENTA
After apprenticing with the likes of Balenciaga in Spain and Antonio Castillo at Lanvin in Paris, the Dominican designer went off on his own in 1965. His penchant for refined, ladylike looks struck a chord with women of means and garnered De la Renta a slew of Coty Awards. He’s since won numerous CFDA awards—including one in 1990 for Lifetime Achievement—and his momentum shows no signs of waning. De la Renta continues to design the collections, and though he’s begun to court a slightly younger, hipper customer, he’s still the tailor of note for women of a certain age.

Metropolitan Building

METROPOLITAN BUILDING
Dating from 1909, the same year the Queensboro Bridge was built, the Metropolitan Building was first an electrical parts factory. Seventy years later it was long vacant and in a sad state of disrepair. In 1980, Eleanor Ambos, who had a successful antique furniture rental business in Manhattan, bought the building for storage space and to accommodate a variety of artisans to set up their studios and workrooms. She undertook a daunting restoration project, and today the Metropolitan Building is a much sought-after venue: for parties, weddings, and film and photography shoots.
