V22: CECI INSPIRATIONS – CHAMPAGNE WISHES

CHAMPAGNE WISHES

Get ready everyone – 2011 is almost here! Now is the time to set down fresh resolutions and spin new dreams for the coming year. For those of you like me, it’s also a welcome opportunity to celebrate in grand style. Although there’s something to be said about ringing in the New Year at home with delicious nibbles and chilled champagne, I’m all about the big party, complete with buckets of bubbly and oodles of confetti.

To give you a sense of what I mean, this week I’m highlighting the invitations I designed for Joscelyn and Aaron. The invites were meant for a wedding at the grand Lyndhurst property in the Hudson Valley, but they capture the spirit of black-tie opulence that’s equally appropriate for a glittering New Year’s bash. As you can see below, the cream, black, and gold set featured all kinds of lavish details, from silhouettes of crystal chandeliers on the save-the-date cards to rich damask patterns on the menu and the numbered table cards. There’s something about the total package that says both “celebration” and “extravagance”—perfect for the kind of New Year’s Eve party that would be on the top of anyone’s list.

This year, whether you’re stepping out in your highest heels or enjoying time at home with loved ones, I’ve got all kinds of tips to make sure it’s a special night. Start with my guide to the most sparkly party accessories, then read on for more advice on how to celebrate in style—from three great party makeup looks to expert guidance on how to serve champagne. May you have an unforgettably fantastic start to the New Year. Happy 2011!

V22: GET THE LOOK – NEW YEAR’S PARTY

CeciStyle Magazine v22: Get The Look - New Year's Party - Ring in the New Year in black-and-gold opulence, complete with bold jewelry and standout accessories

  1. GOLDEN TICKET
For Joscelyn and Aaron’s custom wedding invitation (price upon request, cecinewyork.com), I wanted to evoke a feeling of opulence by featuring metallic damask patterns and silhouettes of crystal chandeliers.

  2. FESTIVE FLICKER
Wow, what a gorgeously designed candle from D.L.&Co ($65, barneys.com)! Plus, it combines delicious notes of blackcurrant and fig.

  3. SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE
This dazzling dress from Diane Von Furstenberg (dvf.com) is my idea of a smart party frock: short, eye-catching and totally unique.

  4. STAR CRAFT
A mesmerizing crystal star adds a festive touch to Kenneth Jay Lane’s black enamel Star Cuff ($170, maxandchloe.com).

  5. BUBBLICIOUS
A perfect New Year’s Eve pair: Riedel’s platinum-rimmed champagne flutes ($44 for set of two, williams-sonoma.com) and these oh-what-a-special-night Grandeur Cocktail Napkins (celebrationsensations.net).

  6. GLITTER GIRL
Deborah Lippmann’s Happy Birthday Nail Color ($18, barneys.com) is a grown-up way to have fun with glitter.

  7. PARTY ON
To create a smoky eye with sparkle, try Bobbi Brown’s Sparkle Glamour Quad ($40, barneys.com).

  8. HIGH SPIRITS
This embellished Giuseppe Zanotti black suede sandal ($879, giuseppezanottidesign.com) really is like jewelry. Pick your favorite LBD and you’re done!

  9. BLACK BEAUTY
Nuits de Noho Chandelier ($380, bondno9.com) is a heady mix of jasmine, vanilla and patchouli that comes in a black bottle dressed with crystals. Now that’s what I call getting decked out.

  10. BASH BAUBLES
Could there be a ring better suited for New Year’s Eve? This Marc by Marc Jacobs Party Girl New Year Ring ($68, shopbop.com) looks like the Times Square Ball that drops once a year.

V22: CECI CREATIVE TIPS – BLACK IS BACK

Ceci Creative Tips
Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York

BLACK IS BACK

These days, brides are breaking all the traditional rules. They’re moving away from expected white card stock and opting for bold shades like black. I love the way this creates a dramatic, unexpected effect for any invitation. Pair black with a white or metallic ink and you will have a chic and sophisticated look. For an even dressier vibe, choose a formal script full of flourishes. Follow Jocelyn’s lead and opt for a subtle tone-on-tone letterpress effect in the background – like the chandelier detail I created for her. This creates depth and graphic interest without being too overpowering. Make sure you mix and match paper shades for your envelopes but keep your ink consistent. Balance is key. By mixing papers you’ll lighten the effect and still make it feel like it’s appropriate for your wedding. As I like to say, don’t be afraid to take risks. When you have more fun, people will notice!

If black is too much for you, opt for a bright color like teal, red or purple. As long as you pair contrasting colors so it’s readable, you will be fine.

V22: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – TIPS ON PICKING PARTY MUSIC FROM DJ DONNA D’CRUZ

Expert Style Tips

DJ Donna D'Cruz

DJ DONNA D’CRUZ
DJ Donna D’Cruz has become the darling of the international jet set due to the enormous breadth of her musical repertoire, her sense of humor and her style. The founder and CEO of Rasa Music, Donna D’Cruz was born in India and grew up in Australia before settling in New York City. Her personal journey makes her uniquely qualified to weave contemporary rhythms and music with the mystical and spiritual. D’Cruz is a model as well as a DJ; her connections in the club and fashion worlds help her unite these high-profile scenes with the world’s spiritual traditions.

I firmly believe that music can make or break a party. It’s more than just something to dance to—it’s the mood that’s in the air at your event. If you’re looking for a great DJ who will read your crowd’s energy level and elevate it with insane talent, Donna is your go-to for guaranteed great music. On top of it all, she is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the out. With her signature Swarovski crystal headphones, she will have your party sparkling in no time! - CECI JOHNSON

Tips on Picking Party Music from DJ Donna D’Cruz:

  1. P – Pick music that is appropriate for the event: Music is one of the most important aspects of any celebration and is often overlooked. If your evening will have a Latin twist to it, then the music of Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Shakira, Sergio Mendez, Afro-Cuban All Stars, or one of my favorites, Latinesque, would fit well. If the evening is a Middle-Eastern-inspired kasbah, then pomegranate margaritas are the perfect cocktails to partner with a little Cheb Mami, Khaled, Radar, Smadj, and the peerless One Night at Momo’s.

  2. A – Allow for last-minute hitches and glitches: If a friend brings an unexpected guest or the food flops or guests arrive later than expected, be flexible and adapt.

  3. S – Selections: Make thoughtful music selections that illustrate your regard for your guests. Even play some Led Zeppelin or Patsy Cline if that’s what you know your guests love.

  4. S – Surprise your guests: Engage a fantastic flamenco dancer or hire a couple to dance the tango for your guests. A belly dancer would fit the kasbah theme. An unexpected surprise will delight your guests and may even get them to hoof a few steps on the dance floor themselves.

  5. I – Intensify the rhythm of the music as the evening progresses: Begin with chilled dinner music and then move on to more upbeat music after the dessert is served. A few classic disco favorites like Disco Inferno by the Trammps, September by Earth, Wind, and Fire or even a Barry White favorite.

  6. O – Organization: Remember to charge your Zune or iPod and/or test your CDs to avoid any skipping. Write out a music plan but remember to be flexible and ready to make changes. Knowing more or less what to play during cocktails, what background music is right during dinner and what music gets the dancing going will help make your evening a surefire success. This is your night, so have fun no matter what happens.

  7. N – Neighbors: Do let your neighbors know about your soiree. If it is going to be a party with dancing and loads of guests and loud music, let them know. Perhaps some movie vouchers for your neighbors would be a well-received gift.

V22: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – FOUNDATION TOOL KIT: MAKE YOUR WAY TO PERFECT SKIN TONE BY PATRICIA LONGO

Expert Style Tips

Patricia Longo

PATRICIA LONGO
Patricia Longo is a first-generation Italian American and a native New Yorker. Patricia’s love of fashion was inspired by living in Italy and she believes that makeup plays an integral part in styling. She founded her own makeup company, Longo Make-up Artists, which is a team of talented artists that specializes in hair and makeup for exclusive events and projects. Her makeup and beauty advice appears in magazines such as Elle, Allure, and ForbesWoman. She did the makeup and hair for Vogue’s online shows in 2009-10. She has recently collaborated with Roy Teeluck, owner of Roy Teeluck Salon in New York City, for special events.

I love being surrounded by creative people. Their energy is addictive and inspiring. Patricia is one of those positive, happy forces who knows her craft so well you don’t have to worry about a thing when working with her. That’s why so many A-listers turn themselves over to her expertise. I am as picky as it comes when it comes to makeup; I especially despise the “cakey” look, which tends to look fake. Luckily, Patricia has mastered the ability to create the perfect skin tone with her artistic blending. Normally she works only in TV and film but recently has opened up to the world of bridal. Now we all can feel like movie stars on our big day! - CECI JOHNSON

This New Year’s Eve I encourage you to take your style up a notch and go for one of the following sparkling holiday looks that I had my friend and celebrity makeup artist Patricia Longo create for us. I asked her to show us three completely different looks and give us great product recommendations so we can easily create the look at home ourselves. Which look will you go for? Natural Shimmer, Glittering Gold or Smokey Drama?

A Bubbly Guide: Celebrate Like A Pro!

Recipes for Style – A Bubbly Guide

Learn how to properly pop a bottle of champagne:

  1. Make sure your champagne is chilled. Begin by unwrapping the foil.
  2. Untwist the wire cage around the cork. Be sure to keep the bottle pointed away from yourself, others and breakables.
  3. Grip the cork and slowly twist the bottle so that the cork stays in your hand and the bottle rotates. Using a towel can help catch any champagne that may spill during this step.
  4. Pour 2 ounces of champagne into a flute and wait until the initial foaming bubbles subside. Then pour again until about two-thirds of the glass is full. Cheers!
