V26: CECI INSPIRATIONS – BALI BEAUTIFUL

BALI BEAUTIFUL

It’s safe to say that Bali is the stuff of dreams. So when my younger sister Michelle decided to make Bali the theme of her wedding – the island was her honeymoon destination – I knew exactly in which direction to head when designing her invitations.

Lush foliage, tropical colors, and a Southeast Asian exoticism were the main themes I wanted to incorporate into her invites. In short, I was going for a complete sense of escape. To add as much ornamentation as possible – but in a sophisticated way – I made the invitation sleeve out of laser-cut paper and had it depict a Balinese temple door, complete with a large dragon’s head. I employed the same technique for the elephant-embellished bellyband that wrapped around the main card. I’d like to think the invitations, coupled with the amazingly creative décor on the big day, truly transported the guests to something as close to Bali as possible.

Here’s hoping we’ll all follow Michelle’s lead and get to the real Bali sometime in the near future (for further inspiration, read her fabulous tips on the island). In the meantime, I’ve got lots of ideas to get you there in spirit at the very least. First, there’s this week’s Get the Look, filled with all sorts of artful accessories for you and your home. Then, check out Michelle’s gorgeous wedding shots – would you believe the actual setting was her mother-in-law’s backyard? To help you on a path to wellness, there’s also tips from Margaret Rubin, a healer from New York City. Plus, Justin Lee shares some smart pointers on wedding photography. Bali ho everyone!

V26: GET THE LOOK – BALI ESCAPE

CeciStyle Magazine v26: Get The Look - Bring a dash of Balinese-inspired style into your life with batik fabrics, carved woods and bursts of hot pink

  1. EXOTIC AND UNIQUE
When my sister Michelle chose to have a Bali-themed wedding, I designed these custom invitations (price upon request, cecinewyork.com) using laser-cut paper. I created a card sleeve that resembled an ornate temple door and a hot-pink bellyband depicting head-to-head elephants.

  2. LOUNGING AROUND
The American couple behind the label Katherine Rally makes their own line of batiks in Bali (katherinerally.com). I’d use them to decorate an entire beach bungalow!

  3. TROPICAL DELIGHT
Hot-pink metallic leather adds a bit of disco glamour to these Tory Burch Thora Thong Sandals ($115, saks.com).

  4. FABULOUS FRONDS
Want a lush, green pop of color for your next dinner party? Try my clever Palm Lasercut Place Mats ($25.95 for set of four, cecinewyork.com).

  5. BATHING BEAUTY
I love how Lanvin’s one-piece bathing suit ($1,000, lanvin.com) has the feel of a gorgeously designed dress.

  6. SATURATED COLOR
For your next beach vacation, why not go bold with Nars’ hot pink Schiap nail polish ($16, barneys.com)?

  7. BLOSSOM AND BRANCH
Made by a Balinese craftsman, this “Frangipani” wood wall panel ($73, novica.com) is a unique piece of decorative art for a small space.

  8. LITERARY JOURNEY
If I were going to Bali, I’d take Matta’s printed fabric-covered journal ($28, mattany.com) with me as a sketchbook.

  9. BEADED ALLURE
Joli’s Peach Earrings ($44, twistonline.com) have just the right amount of fun color—a great choice to take along on your warm-weather travels.

  10. PRINTS CHARMING
This dress from Etro’s spring/summer collection (etro.it) has a kind of tribal chic that’s perfect for the tropics.

V26: CECI CREATIVE TIPS – CULTURALLY-INSPIRED INVITATIONS

Ceci Creative Tips
Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York

CULTURALLY INSPIRED INVITATIONS

As you may know, I love celebrating the world’s many cultures. To me, each one is so special and uniquely fascinating. If you’re looking for a cool design theme for your invitations, I highly recommend finding inspiration in a country’s culture, whether it’s related to your family’s heritage or, in the case of a destination wedding, where you’re getting married. Michelle and Brendan chose to celebrate their honeymoon spot, Bali. I love how they brought the island’s beauty to California. For their design, my team and I embraced the culture and created an intricate laser-cut sleeve inspired by a Balinese temple combined with hand-drawn Balinese patterns. We especially had fun with the elephants on the laser sleeve. Take a close look and you’ll notice that each elephant has one of the couple’s initials on it—an “M” for Michelle and a “B” for Brendan. I love incorporating personal details like that throughout my work! And don’t forget to carry the theme into your wedding’s accessories, like menus, place cards, favor tags and programs. Show guests your excellent attention to detail and make each one special. I loved bringing the Balinese patterns into the cocktail umbrellas and passed-appetizer signs. Be sure to check out how all the fun details came to life at their wedding. Whatever you do, just don’t forget to be creative!

V26: SAVVY STYLE ADVICE – MICHELLE HOFFMAN RAASCH, REAL BRIDE

Savvy Style Advice
Michelle Hoffman Raasch

MICHELLE HOFFMAN RAASCH
Our personal motto was to think outside the box and have fun! Just because it’s a wedding, that doesn’t mean it needs to be stuffy. We used our honeymoon to Bali, Indonesia as our inspiration. We played off the theme in all aspects of our wedding – from our save-the-dates and invites, to our flowers, linens, décor, and location.

It’s never too early to get started. The more time the better.

V26: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS BY JUSTIN LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

Expert Style Tips

Justin Lee

JUSTIN LEE PHOTOGRAPHY
I believe in bringing style and grace to my photography. My goal is to create beautiful, vibrant, timeless fine-art images while being gracefully interactive. My approach is very journalistic, with subtle direction when needed. I do my best to let your wedding day unfold naturally and organically – with a modern twist.

We often praise movie directors for the masterpieces they create on the silver screen, but I must say that after working with Justin Lee, I feel the Academy should add a whole new category for Photography Art & Direction. Justin’s photo shoots are always so successful that I am continually blown away by his keen eye, artistic direction, and ability to turn the most mundane backdrops into Vogue-worthy images. His calm, kind demeanor and passion to continually push himself makes him unstoppable! Once you experience Justin’s work, it may be hard to love another picture as much as his. - CECI JOHNSON

Wedding Photography Tips by Justin Lee Photography:

  1. Plan ahead: It’s so important to make sure you plan for enough time to capture amazing photography. The more you can shoot before the ceremony, the better. It allows you to split the day in half; everything after the ceremony is almost completely journalistic. It allows for the bride and groom to really be a part of their wedding, without having to be gone for large periods of time. I’m big on not rushing my couples. I want them to flow through the day and really be in the moment, not rushed.

  2. Customize your wedding: One major trend I’m seeing is more and more highly customized weddings, with couples going after something really unique to their style and personality. I think it’s great. I like the move toward weddings that really feel like a celebration, with bits of tradition rather than the other way around. It’s often this amazing party, with aspects of the conventional mixed in with very modern, cool decor and details!

  3. Trust your photographer: My favorite part of being a photographer is the huge honor I feel when two people allow me to be a part of such an important day in their lives. I treasure that trust and truly do my very best to create something one-of-a-kind and unique to each couple.

V26: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – TIPS ON INCORPORATING BALINESE WISDOM INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE BY MARGARET RUBIN

Expert Style Tips

Margaret Rubin

MARGARET RUBIN
Margaret Rubin, D.C., LAc., is a chiropractor and licensed acupuncturist. She began her training as an undergraduate in experimental psychology at Duke University when she became interested in mind–body medicine. She received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1986 and a Master of Science in Acupuncture in 2009. She is a certified yoga teacher and has studied meditation on many long journeys to India and Asia. She maintains a private practice in Manhattan that focuses on the physical and spiritual well-being of each individual.

I have been a patient of Dr. Rubin ever since I moved to NYC. She has been a calming and healing force in my life. Not only is she medically trained, but she offers wise advice on health and wellness to all of her clients. I find this essential, especially for us crazy-busy, stressed-out New Yorkers. If you suffer from chronic back pain – or really anything that’s ailing you – Dr. Rubin is your go-to. With degrees in both chiropractic and acupuncture care, Margaret is always a pleasure to work with – plus she’s the kindest spirit around. An added perk: stepping into her zen office is like being transported to Thailand for a session of wellness – okay, sans the turquoise waters. - CECI JOHNSON

Tips on incorporating Balinese wisdom into your daily life by Margaret Rubin:

Bali is a beautiful land with people deeply connected to nature and the realms of the spirit.

We can incorporate their wisdom into our daily lives by tuning into the four elements that make up our physical and spiritual worlds: earth, water, fire, and air. These elements are found in the medicines of Bali, India, Tibet, and ancient China. Life is a beautiful flow and balance of energies moving from one element to another; we can start to focus our attention on each of these elements and add a healthy new dimension to our lives.

  1. The earth element: Start to add root vegetables to your diet, particularly during the winter in colder climates. Vegetables that grow under the ground are full of important minerals and colors that give a high quality of antioxidant nutrients to our diets. Two colorful favorites are beets and sweet potatoes.

  2. The water element: Water is fluid and always moving. In Chinese medicine, salty and bitter foods are associated with the water element. Watercress is a perfect combination. The bitter acts as an excellent blood cleanser and liver tonic. Add watercress regularly to salads and soups to help keep the liver moving properly and lend support to the kidneys.

  3. The fire element: Fire is the nature of the sun. We can think about this in many ways: one is as the fire of digestion. The internal fire we need to break down our food properly comes from enzymes. If you are experiencing symptoms of bloating and digestive distress, try a safe and simple addition of digestive enzymes to your diet.

  4. The air element: Many Asian cooking styles, including the Balinese, use herbs and spices that are pungent. The quality of pungent helps to detoxify the lungs of mucus. It also disperses the stuck energy of the lungs and the large intestine. Hot peppers and chilies are used to protect the lungs. Members of the onion family are also very helpful, as are garlic, turnips, and ginger.

Bring some of these beautiful Balinese medicine guidelines into your daily life and see what happens!

V26: GREAT ESCAPES – TOP 10 THINGS TO TRY IN BALI BY MICHELLE RAASCH

Great Escapes

Top 10 Things to Try in Bali

  1. Cooking classes: Want to learn to cook like an Indonesian? Casa Luna offers a hands-on, educational, all-day class.

  2. Whitewater rafting: Looking for adventure? Whitewater raft down the Ayung river! Not only is it a great workout, the sights and sounds are breathtaking.

  3. Surfing: Surfers from all over come to Uluwatu to catch the waves of a lifetime. Non-surfers can sit on the edge of the cliff, sip on a Bintang, and enjoy the view!

  4. Seafood BBQ on the beach: Pick your fish and the way you want it cooked, then relax on the beach while you wait for your meal – pure bliss!

  5. Best breakfast spot: Check out Grocer & Grind.

  6. Massages: Don’t waste your time and money on a fancy spa. Pay $11 for a 90-minute massage at a local spot. It may not have all the fluff of a fancy spa, but you will get the best massage ever! At this rate you can afford to get two massages per day.

  7. Monkeying around: The animal kingdom in Bali is quite impressive. Monkeys live freely, which means you can spot them in the wild. There are several places in Bali where you can see the monkeys, but the most famous is the Monkey Forest in Ubud. The beautiful Monkey Forest is home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques. There are no gates, so you can even spot the monkeys on the streets of Ubud.

Right before the entrance you can buy some bananas. This is a fun thing to do, but the monkeys can be a bit aggressive, so be careful. They will do whatever it takes to get those bananas. If you’re scared of the monkeys, just watch other people feeding them. They will run, jump, and climb all over you.

The macaques are quite funny; watch them playing around and acting crazy!

  8. Temple discovery: The temple of Tanah Lot stands on a rocky island just off the southwest coast of Bali. One of Bali’s most sacred sea temples, Tanah Lot is dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea. The temple is said to be guarded from evil by the sea snakes that inhabit the caves below. One of Bali’s most important sea temples, Pura Tanah Lot (“Temple of Land in the Middle of the Sea”) is a spectacular sight, especially at sunset.

  9. Elephant Safari Park: A visit to the Elephant Safari Park is a must for any visitor to Bali. Get up close and personal with these incredible animals in a beautiful tropical-park setting. You can see elephants immersing themselves in the park lake, in between riding, painting or other activities. Feed them by hand, touch them, take photos with them, then learn more about elephants’ ancestry and diversity at the park’s historical and graphic displays. When you are there, don’t forget to ask your elephant driver to see the HONEY BEAR!!! The honey bear is one of my favorite experiences ever. This sweet and loving guy was so cool. All he wanted to do was to be held, hugged and cuddled. He loved me and would not leave me alone. As you can tell in the picture, I loved him too. It’s not every day you get to play with a real stuffed animal.

  10. Balinese dance: To get the real Bali experience, you’ve got to see at least one show. It’s very interesting and like nothing I had ever seen before. Balinese dances are a very ancient tradition related to religious expression among the Balinese people. They are also an integral part of Balinese culture and are performed at main temple festivals and ceremonies. The makeup, costumes, music, and dance will stay with you for a long time.

V26: RECIPES FOR STYLE – MINCED BEEF SATAY

Recipes for Style

Minced Beef Satay

Although Indonesia’s 17,000-plus islands are home to the largest Muslim population in the world, Bali is where its Hindu minority resides, so pork is permitted.

Indonesian cuisine uses many of the exotic and wonderful ingredients that we in the West can now find in our Asian markets: lemongrass, lime leaves, chilis of many varieties, coconut, soy sauce, peanuts, ginger, turmeric, tamarind, cardamom, basil and garlic, to name just a few. The islands grow the staple rice, vegetables, bananas, and other tropical fruit including coconut. They also provide goat, lamb, beef, duck and pork. Being islands, they naturally have access to great fish and crustaceans. Indonesia’s varied cuisine has been influenced by the Chinese, Indians, Dutch and British over many centuries.

The Dutch-influenced rijsttafel, or rice table, is an elaborate Asian-style buffet where rice is the platform for many other little dishes and tastes. This Balinese specialty I’ve selected to share with you is typical of one of the varied dishes you’d find on a rijsttafel menu.

Recipes for Style - Minced Beef Satay

Yield: 24 pieces. Serves 12 as part of an hors d’oeuvre or rijsttafel menu with other items.

Ingredients:
1 cup finely minced yellow onion
1 tablespoon finely minced garlic
1 teaspoon grated or finely minced fresh ginger
1 teaspoon very finely minced soft inside stem of lemongrass
1 kaffir lime leaf finely shredded and minced
1 teaspoon ground coriander seed
½ teaspoon ground cumin
1 – 2 bird’s eye chilies or 1 jalapeno finely minced, seeds and ribs kept separately
½ pound not lean, freshly ground ‘burger’ beef from your butcher
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

24 wooden skewers 6” long

Directions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients except the chili seeds and ribs in a medium-sized mixing bowl and mix well.
  2. To test for flavor balance, place a teaspoonful in a small heated sauté pan and cook on both sides till done.
  3. Taste and adjust with salt, pepper and additional seeds and ribs if desired.
  4. Using a tablespoon sized ice cream scoop or measuring spoon, measure out mixture till bowl is empty.
  5. Wetting your hands lightly with cold water, form the meat into bullet shaped patties.
  6. Skewer the patties.
  7. Place the patties on a sheet tray lined with tin foil in neat rows.
  8. Cover the skewers – not the meat – with a narrow ‘blanket’ of foil to prevent the skewers from burning.
  9. Bake in a 400 degree oven until cooked through – about 4 – 6 minutes for medium.
