V6: CECI INSPIRATIONS – GET COOL FOR SCHOOL

GET COOL FOR SCHOOL

The Mandell School, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, is the kind of educational haven every open-minded parent dreams of: small, creative and socially responsible. When I was approached to design an invitation celebrating the institution’s new school and kindergarten-through-eighth-grade division, I challenged myself to match its forward-thinking approach. Inspired by the Mandell School’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint—and its mission to pass that eco-friendly attitude onto its kids—I chose seeded paper for the invitation. Embedded with wildflower seeds, this special paper needs minimal tending to turn into a mini garden. As a helpful reminder, I added vials filled with dirt and water. Balsa wood packaging wrapped in the kids’ artwork added a playful effect. I’m proud to say that all that effort paid off, not just for the school, but for my business as well: The set won “Best Invitation Design” at the BizBash Style Awards and the ISES Big Apple Awards. Now that I’m feeling the back-to-school spirit in the air, I’ve compiled my own wish list of colorful playthings and gadgets for the young—and the young-at-heart.

BOX IT UP

When a flat envelope simply will not do, it’s time to take your invitations up a notch. For the most impact, consider mailing your message in a box. Everyone loves receiving a present – so why not make your guests feel truly special and show them how serious you are about your event? I promise they will notice that your event is not-to-be-missed. And when your box is pretty enough to be saved, like the Mandell School’s, you have given your guests a nice memento – something they will keep and use for years to come. So smart of you!

V6: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – 5 TIPS TO START THE SCHOOL YEAR IN STYLE BY GABRIELLA ROWE OF THE MANDELL SCHOOL

Expert Style Tips

Gabriella Rowe of The Mandell School

MANDELL SCHOOL
Gabriella Rowe is the Head of School at The Mandell School, a co-educational institution for Toddlers through Eighth Grade located on the Upper West Side. Gabriella’s primary mission is to safeguard the loving, supportive and stimulating school environment her family, who founded the school in 1939, worked so hard to create. Gabriella has been at The Mandell School since 1999 and has spearheaded it’s recent expansion into an ongoing school.

There is no question that I fully embrace creativity, whether it comes from a person or a company. And anyone who inspires others though art gets the Ceci seal of approval. Gabriella’s mission to teach the kids of New York City the importance of the arts and nurture them using unique educational programs, like those that support the environment, is just icing on the cake! - CECI JOHNSON

5 Tips to Start the School Year in Style:

  1. Be safe: Make sure all of your child’s health and allergy information forms have been turned in to your school. If your child has severe allergies, make sure to speak to your school nurse before the school year starts. Confirm that your school has your most up to date contact information and emergency contacts. Keeping everyone informed is the best way to prevent emergencies.

  2. Start planning: Before you know it Spring Break will be here so check your school calendar! Update your calendar with all the important dates listed. Make note of your child’s performances, vacations and parent/teacher conferences. You will be so grateful to have planned in advance.

  3. Know your teachers: Find out the best way to reach your teachers and school administration. Post their contact information prominently in your household and enter the information into your contacts. Your child’s teacher is influential in their day to day life and you will want to know how to reach them.

  4. Volunteer: Get involved with your school’s Parent Association. Volunteering is a great way for you to get to know your school community. Don’t pick just any activity. If you have the time to give, offer your talents. Are you a graphic designer? Amazing with a sewing machine? Let your Parent Association know so they can put you to work and you can really shine.

  5. Take a deep breath: The beginning of the school year can be a very exciting time, but remember to relax. Stay positive and remember that this will soon all be routine again!

V6: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – TOP PLANNING TIPS BY JENNIFER ZABINSKI

Expert Style Tips

Jennifer Zabinski

JENNIFER ZABINKSI
Jennifer Zabinski earned a degree form Cornell University Hotel School and found immediate success working for various companies related to event planning. Her time spent at The Ritz Carlton, The Four Seasons, The Parker Hyatt and her advertising work with Cartier, BMW, and Rolex all contribute to her professional and sophisticated planning style. Jennifer has been partners with Claudia Hanlin of the Wedding Library since July 2001 and currently plans many events around the world.

It’s always a pleasure to work with fun, happy people – especially when it comes to event planners. Personality is truly everything. Jennifer always has a smile on her face and is ready to try anything, which I love! This open attitude goes a long way toward making planning enjoyable. What’s more, I absolutely love her fashion sense. Every time I see her I always want to shop her closet. Great style makes for great parties! - CECI JOHNSON

Any expert planner will tell you that coordination is key when planning an event and making sure it runs smoothly. Here are some of my planning tips that are applicable for any occasion: a birthday party, a wedding, or a school opening!

Top Planning Tips from Jennifer Zabinski:

  1. Be clear on the tone of your evening and the message it will send to your guests: Try not to get too overwhelmed at first with every aspect of the evening. Rather, begin by thinking about your theme. For the Mandell opening, we wanted to take their mission to be green to a whole new level by tailoring every aspect of the evening to being authentically environmentally friendly.

  2. Make a guest list and hire your invitation designer: Think about who you would want to be in attendance to celebrate with you on your special day and make your guest list first. For us, we wanted to include directors of administration, faculty, parents, alumni and distinguished members of the community. Making sure to cover all of my bases by inviting all of the who’s who in academia was no simple task. I turned to Ceci Johnson for inspiration for how to creatively (and greenly) invite our guests to this monumental occasion. Ceci thought of using recycled wood and created a custom illustration of the Mandell School carved into the top of the box. Inside were the invitations, which were hand wrapped in recycled paper. The duality of the entire package as both an invitation and a hand crafted work of art really set the right tone to our guests. The boxes were hand delivered to each recipient, and with a guest list upwards of 400 people living all over the city and going on summer vacations at varying times, we had our work cut out for us.

  3. Have a menu that is exciting and unique to you: Make a menu for your event keeping in mind different options that will accommodate your guests’ potential dining restrictions or needs. Supporting farmers from the Hudson Valley region is important to me and so when I enlisted Olivier Cheng to cater our event, I asked him to consider using home grown goods. Olivier was able to create a menu for us that highlighted local flavors and utilized local produce. To say the least, the food was positively divine and a big hit among the guests.

  4. Choose your décor wisely: In the same vein that invitations represent the first impression your guest will have of the evening, your décor is the backdrop for your entire party and therefore should compliment your theme. For our opening, I asked Jennifer Stone of Stone Kelly to help decorate and she, keeping green in mind, decided to opt for plants as opposed to flowers. The plants were potted in decoupage pots, which were hand painted by the children of the Mandell School. Guests were invited to take the plants at the end of the night and encouraged to either plant them at their school or at their home. The gift that keeps on giving aspect of the planters championed our desire to contribute to the ecosystem and was representative of our no waste mentality.

  5. Capture your event for a lifetime: Make sure you contract your photographer to be on site well before the party begins in order to shoot every detail from the night. I asked our photographer from Élan Artists to print out my favorites from the evening and sent them in a newsletter to the parents of the Mandell student body as a memento.

  6. Know your entertainment well: Everyone appreciates a musical element to a party so make sure you meet your band or DJ beforehand and be honest with what kind of music you do (and do not) want to hear! They will be happy to work with your requests and would prefer for you to speak up sooner rather than later. Cultural affluence and versatility are keystones of the Mandell community and so it was no surprise to me that Gabriella’s husband Kenny, who is also the musical director at the school, took care of the entertainment for the night. Gabriella had her moment in the spotlight as well when she got up on stage and accompanied her husband vocally in an enchanting duet that concluded the events for the evening.

V6: RECIPES FOR STYLE – MACARONI AND CHEESE

Recipes for Style

Macaroni and Cheese

When I thought of this week’s CeciStyle theme, I thought how perfect it would be to have Peter Callahan of Callahan Catering as one of my experts. He is known for “playing with his food” and in turn has created the most clever miniature hors d’oeuvres that I’ve ever seen – from his creative take on Pigs in a Blanket Two Ways, to the most adorable mini-burgers. His food is art – designed to be enjoyed for all ages. Lucky for us, he’s kindly given us one of his popular recipes to try at home. I don’t know about you, but as I kid I loved it and even now as an adult, I can never deny the opportunity to eat good ol mac and cheese!

Recipes for Style – Macaroni and Cheese

Yields: 24 hors d’oeuvres

For the Parmesan Cups:
1 1/4 cups finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

For the Macaroni
1 teaspoon coarse salt, for cooking macaroni
1 cup elbow macaroni, uncooked
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup grated extra-sharp white cheddar
1 cup grated Cotswald cheese
1 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
1/4 cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Parmesan Cups:
Heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat, add 1 teaspoon of the grated Parmesan, using the back of the teaspoon to spread the cheese out into the size of a silver dollar. Repeat twice so you have 3 cheese circles cooking at once. After 2 minutes, when the cheese is golden, carefully flip it over using a small spatula. Cook the other side until golden, 20 to 30 seconds and then immediately transfer it to a 1 ½ inch tart pan, or put over the bottom of a small glass (about 1 ½ inch diameter), to create a cup. Let cool and remove.

Macaroni:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the salt and the macaroni and return to a boil. Cook following the package instructions until the pasta is al dente. Rinse under cold water, to stop the cooking, drain and set aside.

Cheese Sauce:
Pour the cream into a large heavy-bottomed saucepan and gently simmer over medium to medium-low heat (be careful so the cream doesn’t bubble up and out of the saucepan) until it is reduced by half, about 20-30 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and add the cheddar, Cotwald, and Parmesan cheeses and whisk until the sauce is completely smooth. Stir in the cooked macaroni and remove from the heat.

Spoon macaroni mixture into parmesan cup and garnish with chopped parsley. Enjoy!

V6: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – TOP CATERING TIPS BY PETER CALLAHAN OF CALLAHAN CATERING

Expert Style Tips

Peter Callahan of Callahan Catering

CALLAHAN CATERING

The company creates timeless looks, food at the caliber of a five-star restaurant, and beautiful design—all coupled with the best service and flawless execution. With the belief that food should be a form of entertainment, it caters events from Maine to Los Angeles, as well as internationally. Based in New York, Callahan Catering also maintains an office and kitchen in its original home city of Philadelphia.

I love people who aren’t afraid to try something new and Peter Callahan has always been a trend-setter. He consistently creates fascinating things with gourmet food and continues to impress me with his creations. Not only will your guests love his food, but they, too, will be amazed with its unique presentation and playful creativity. Like me and many of my esteemed colleagues, Peter has received the prestigious Modern Bride Top 25 Trendsetter Award, regarded as the Oscar of the wedding industry. - CECI JOHNSON

Top Catering Tips by Peter Callahan:

  1. Do play with your food: Mom always said, don’t play with your food but I tend to disagree. I love to get creative with my catering and present food in an unexpected way. Think differently and make unique shapes out of your foods to put a creative spin on the expected for your guests. Don’t take things too seriously and serve pigs in a blanket to adults in a chic way. Pass mini burgers and fries and then personalize the trays. If your daughter likes pink with black polka dots, line trays with this paper. Serve mac and cheese on a spoon, or if you want to go all the way put it in a Parmesan canapé.

  2. Bigger isn’t always better: You want to make sure your caterer creates beautiful looking bites that are actually easy to eat, and have no risk of creating a mess on your party frock. You really want all hors d’oeuvres to be one bite size, or if it must be two bites - that’s the absolute limit. Plus it needs to be something that won’t crumble all over you and create a mess. And no side sauces – if it needs a sauce, dollop it on top. People are more comfortable with smaller hors d’oeuvres and will try more things if you do it this way.

  3. Presentation is everything: Consider thinking outside the box on your presentation. It’s not only about the food. Impress your guests with pigs in a blanket presented on wheat grass, or mini grilled cheese sandwiches that stand up on the tray. Cones look chic held in holes in an acrylic tray. Put frites in customized paper cones maybe with your party date or initials on them. Make the trays be almost as much fun as the food!

  4. Choosing your flavors: Make somewhat of a road map of what your party theme is – comfort food, or retro 70′s – or if its thai food stick to that, but don’t mix the two. You can do spicy but always gear your spice to those who are attending and might not appreciate 4 alarm heat – think of grandmother and junior. Also if you like combining shots of wine, beer or margaritas with food, think about what the under-age crowd will get. Maybe instead of wine and cheese, do wine and martinellis. Or instead of artichoke lollipops, for the kids do chicken parmesan lollipops cut out with a cookie cutter.

  5. Timing is key: When serving passed hors d’oeuvres make sure your caterer doesn’t overwhelm your guests with too much all at once. Timing is everything not only for temperature (serving food hot) but for the flow of the party. If you are expecting 40 guests wait until you have approximately 10 guests before serving food, perhaps send a tray or two out, but guests feel more relaxed eating when there is more of a crowd.

  6. Do the unexpected: Make your guests smile by serving fancy grown-up food in a clever, fun, kid-at-heart way. Miniature comfort foods are perfect for this. When they see cotton candy and mini drink popsicles at a dessert party, the smile says, “finally someone who knows exactly what I want”. Or try hors d’oeuvres that look like ice cream cones – tuna tartare in a cone, or mango shrimp lollipops with the hors d’oeuvres standing vertically in a tray. Or caviar on edible cracker spoons, hot dogs in one inch lengths – they all have the same effect. When never seen before at a party, they are a pleasant surprise and connecting point for people of all ages, and tastes.
