V61: CECI INSPIRATIONS – ALL BOOKED UP

ALL BOOKED UP

Now that fall is officially here, it’s time to get smart about your work wardrobe. I’m talking about investing in a great new holds-everything handbag, a pair of sturdy-but-chic heels, and all the other sharp clothes and accessories that are sure to set you apart from the crowd. Naturally, this also includes stocking up on fall-themed cards and invitations, like the ones I’ve chosen below. Like I always say, how you present yourself on paper is just as important as what you wear!

To get you inspired, this week I’m featuring the invitations my team and I designed for wedding planning resource The Knot’s 15th anniversary celebration (for which I’m proud to say we won a Big Apple Award!). The event was a dazzling affair featuring the wedding industry’s best, including host and The Knot founder Carley Roney, planner Bryan Rafanelli, event wiz David Stark, dress designer Monique Lhuillier, floral genius Preston Bailey, cake talent Sylvia Weinstock and photographer Christian Oth, who took the images of the party below. Because it was held at the New York Public Library, we made the invite cover resemble a row of classic romance novels that included Pride and Prejudice and Gone with the Wind. The volume in the center represented The Knot’s own love stories it has told over the years. Invitees opened the card to find the party information presented like an old-fashioned bookplate, plus a bookmark listing all the vendors who helped make the gala a success (which guests could use as a reference when planning their next event).

Although few of us can afford to spend all our time at the library, we certainly can appreciate acting and looking smart. So this week check out all the ways to stay on top of your game, from the accessory-filled picks in Get the Look to wise advice on responding to invitations from Rebecca Taylor of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes. With such a strong style arsenal, you’ll be ready to start booking up your calendar with confidence!

V61: CECI CREATIVE TIPS – IT SAYS RSVP FOR A REASON!

IT SAYS RSVP FOR A REASON!

For this week’s tip, I asked my friend Rebecca Taylor from the incredibly imaginative couture cake house Ron Ben-Israel Cakes if we could feature this recent post she wrote on a topic so dear to me. I couldn’t agree with her more and hope that after reading it you will, too. Please join me in pledging to uphold our manners and social duties, and remember the next time you’ve been invited to an occasion to take a moment out of your busy schedule and follow what Rebecca says.

It Says RSVP for a Reason! by NYC Cake Girl Rebecca Taylor of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes

I am going to stand on my soapbox now… (This posting is really for all of my party planner friends out there, as well as my friends who host dinners and parties at their homes.)

I spent my Labor Day weekend with some of my best friends who decided to have a BBQ. They sent out an Evite, spent lots of money on food and drink, and opened their doors to celebrate the last official weekend of summer. (It was a great party, by the way!)

But let me get back to their Evite…

Their Evite went out a little more than a month before the party. It was sent to more than 50 people. About half responded “yes,” a few responded “maybe” (Really Evite? “Maybe”? Do you see “maybe” on a wedding invitation?), the rest didn’t respond at all. It really makes me wonder what kind of society we have become when we can’t take a few moments out of our “busy” lives to respond to a simple invitation. RSVP or répondez s’il vous plaît means to “please respond.” Friends and family take the time to open their doors and have celebrations. These kinds of events take lots of planning, time and money. Yet most people these days do not have the courtesy of taking the time to send a simple response.

At my friend’s BBQ, half of the people who did respond “yes” to the Evite didn’t even show up. There was no telephone call, email or text message to say they wouldn’t be able to make it. I understand that things in life happen and we have to break our plans, but the least we can do is let our host know that we won’t be able to make it to their party. No excuse is needed, and your host won’t waste food and can make the proper accommodations if it’s a sit-down dinner. Of course my friends were disappointed that their guests couldn’t make the party, but they were even more disappointed that no courtesy was given to them to let them know their guests wouldn’t be able to attend.

Being in the wedding industry has made me hyper-aware of this situation. When we work with hotels, I am often waiting for the guest counts to come in from their clients so I can tell my chef how many servings a cake needs to be. I hear all kinds of stories from our party planner friends that they are calling guests on the phone on behalf of the bride because more than half of the RSVPs are still missing. (In a wedding invite they are already pre-stamped. The work is done for you; all you have to do is check a little box!) Whenever I receive an invite – whether it’s an Evite to a work or social event or a paper invitation I’ve received in the mail – I take that moment to respond. After all, this person went out of their way to invite me to something special, the least I can do is give them the courtesy of a response. Whether it is “yes” or “no,” it’s polite and it’s the right thing to do.

(I will get off my soapbox now…)

V61: GREAT ESCAPES – STRAND BOOK STORE

Great Escapes

Strand Book Store

With $600 and his personal book collection, Ben Bass opened Strand Book Store on New York’s legendary Book Row in 1927. Book Row housed 48 bookstores from 1890 to 1960, and was located on Fourth Avenue between Union Square and Astor Place. The Strand, named after the famous publishing street in London, is the sole survivor from those days.

Strand Book Store remains a fiercely independent family business with Fred and his daughter, Nancy Bass Wyden, at the helm. With over 200 employees, more than 2.5 million used, new, art and rare books, a renovated main store and growing traffic to its website, the Strand looks forward to offering great books at great prices to book-lovers worldwide for another 80 years.

The Rare Book Room at the strand is now available to rent to host parties and private events. Please contact the Strand directly for more details.
