V68: CECI INSPIRATIONS – BOTANICAL NEW YORK

BOTANICAL NEW YORK

You don’t have to get married in a botanical garden to incorporate flowers in your invitations. Even if your event is being held in a big city like New York, I think you’ll agree that an invite decorated with blooms can only add to the whole romance.

As an example, just look at how quintessential New York couple Julissa and Chad approached their invitations. Opting for a set of cards from our ready-to-order Botanical collection, they chose Bijoux, which features gorgeous, old-fashioned botanicals decorated with charming little bees. They personalized their choice by adding a wash of purple to the flowers and other elements of the suite like the save-the-date and the menu.

I, too, love bringing flowers – or any form of nature – into my hectic New York City life, which is why you’ll find me strolling through Central Park any chance I get (that’s me enjoying a sunny fall day on one of the park’s benches, below). But before you take the hint and head outdoors yourself, make sure to read part two of my tips on hiring the best invitation designer for your next big party. I guarantee they’ll save you time and money – and who doesn’t like that?

V68: CECI CREATIVE TIPS – TOP 10 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR STATIONER BEFORE YOU HIRE THEM

Ceci Creative Tips
Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York

TOP 10 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR STATIONER BEFORE YOU HIRE THEM

So you’re engaged and you have the date and venue picked out. Now what? It’s time to order your wedding invitations, of course! I recognize that getting married can be an exciting but overwhelming experience for most. Typically, this is the first time you’ll be doing many of the tasks required, especially ordering wedding invitations. There are so many rules regarding etiquette, timing, and design choices, not to mention guidelines regarding printing techniques, costs, etc! It can be very daunting, I know. That’s why I’m here to help.

Below, I’ve outlined the top 10 essential questions you need to ask your prospective stationer to make sure you’re hiring the best of the best for your wedding invitation needs. I want to make sure you do it right the first time and avoid any unfortunate (and unhappy) mishaps along the way. I have been working with countless brides for many years and they continually tell me that working with Ceci New York has been the most enjoyable part of their entire wedding process. That is the biggest compliment, so I hope that the simple questions below will help you in your journey to finding what works for you.

Ceci

Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Stationer Before You Hire Them by Ceci Johnson (Part 2)

Read Part 1 here

  1. Can I see samples beforehand? Once I’ve placed my order, will I be given paper, ink and design proofs so I can see what my design will look like? If you want to see a sample of the quality before you place your order, a good company will be happy to send you a few designs at random so you can understand what they look like. However, it’s not customary to get the exact sample of the design you’re interested in, and there is often a small fee (at Ceci New York it’s $50) that will be credited to your order should you decide to move forward. Once you’ve chosen to proceed, make sure that you get to see samples of paper stocks, inks, and proofs – all these details need to be approved and signed off on during the design ordering process. It’s important to touch and feel everything so you can confirm that it’s just the way you like it. You don’t want any surprises as colors may look one way online but completely different when printed. Still, please understand that this is done only after you hire your stationer (to avoid people taking samples and copying them). Rest assured that at Ceci New York once you’re signed up, you will see every detail along the way.

  2. Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Stationer Before You Hire Them by Ceci Johnson

  3. Is location a problem? What if I do not live in the same state or country as my invitation designer? Can I still work with them? I can speak for my company as this is a question we get every day. Absolutely! With email, FedEx and phone, there are no limits to who we can work with. We have clients from all over the world, including Australia, Hong Kong, London, Paris and California. And you will still receive the same special service just as if you were here in our showroom. As long as the company has no problem shipping you samples of everything, you will be completely fine working with them wherever you are in the world!

  4. Help, what do I say? Will you help me with my wording? You should not be expected to know precisely what to say in your invitation ensemble. Your stationer is there to provide examples and guide you as to what’s proper etiquette-wise. That said, your stationer is not a mind reader. Only you know the exact details of your event, how your parents’ names are spelled, and the times and dates that need to be communicated to your guests. So don’t forget to submit clear, well-written, detailed content for the company to work with. And remember, each proof is an opportunity to edit and check for typos. It’s essential that you check the text and not just the design!

  5. Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Stationer Before You Hire Them by Ceci Johnson

  6. Do you provide calligraphy and assembly services? It’s important you understand just how full-service your chosen invitation company is. Ask the company if you have to order extra envelopes to cover for any mistakes that may occur. At Ceci New York, if our clients select to use our calligraphy services, they are not required to order extra envelopes. We guarantee that for them. However, if they opt to work with an outside calligrapher, then they will be required to order an extra set of 25. These are hidden costs that could add up so make sure you ask beforehand.

Bonus tip from Ceci Johnson: What is the most important thing for you to get right once you’ve hired a designer?

Communication is everything. If you don’t communicate what you want and be honest with your vendors, then you will be missing out on receiving the full service. No matter how amazing your invitation designer is, they are not mind readers. You’ve hired them for a reason and your feedback and honest communication is what makes the experience so successful. Don’t ever feel shy about sharing your thoughts. We’re here to help you and won’t be offended. Also, make sure you get back to your stationer promptly with your feedback. Remember, it’s a creative, collaborative process; without your feedback, the project can’t be finished.

V68: EXPERT STYLE TIPS – TIPS ON NAVIGATING WEDDING TRENDS BY BELATHÉE PHOTOGRAPHY

Expert Style Tips

<br />
Annabel Braithwaite and Dorothée Brand of Belathée Photography

BELATHÉE PHOTOGRAPHY
Annabel Braithwaite and Dorothée Brand launched Belathée Photography in 2003. Together they have established a boutique wedding photography company that remains true to custom service and sincere creativity. Whether photographing together or separately, at events large or small, Annabel and Dorothée create their signature Belathée look. It is a unique balance of fine art, photojournalism and portraiture. With their presence in both New York City and Seattle, they are available for national and international assignments.

Tips on Navigating Wedding Trends by Belathée Photography

  1. Staying true to yourself: We sometimes get the impression that couples are inspired yet at the same time a bit overwhelmed by the bounty of trends in today’s wedding market. We believe that it’s most important that couples bring their personality to the planning for the perfect day. After all, the celebration is for two individuals and their families.

  2. Handling different generations: We take care and pride in how we engage the personalities of our subjects, whether they are children, elderly or anyone in between. We keep in mind that not everyone is comfortable being photographed and are quick and have fun where we can.

  3. Timeless photographs: Our goal is to create a body of images that will hold visual significance in the future. We strive for strong, classic and beautiful imagery and keep some distance from being overly “trendy.”

  4. Less can be more: Sometimes ornamental details can be overdone. Perhaps there are too many and the poignancy gets lost. It’s fun to incorporate details into photographs but we also make sure to create portraits that aren’t overly “propped” for the client that likes a more simple portrait. It comes down to really connecting with your couple and learning what they are all about.

  5. Giving the gift of a photograph: In addition to many beautiful photographs of our couples, weddings are an incredible opportunity to have your families and friends photographed in celebration mode. The gift of sharing photos is almost infinite. So much joy comes from the mementos created on a wedding day.

The Wedding Library is your one-stop-shop for everything weddings and it prides itself on providing the most treasured brands in NYC and beyond. If you’re a bride looking for convenience, the Wedding Library is your go-to. - CECI JOHNSON

New York City Wedding Planning Tips by The Wedding Library

  1. What is your favorite thing about planning NYC weddings? I love the history of the venues, the grandeur of the old clubs and hotels in New York. It’s meaningful to be able to incorporate elements of a couple’s first date, restaurants they love and museums they visited together into their wedding day. In New York City, a city that I love, too, it’s even better. Having a hot dog station at your wedding or offering favors from the farmer’s market gives your guests a little part of your history and shares a wonderful piece of your life with them.

  2. What information should brides have prepared before meeting with a planner? Knowing the vibe and understanding the scale of your wedding in terms of “degree of difficulty” are probably great (but intangible!) things to know about your event before meeting with a planner. I can provide a lot of direction and help even at the first meeting if the couple can tell me how they want the experience to feel. A term like “classic, elegant, traditional” gives me a world of direction, as does “casual, sophisticated chic.” Once you get this down, knowing your rough number of guests and your budget are the most important things to tell a planner to set her on the right path. From there, your planner should be brimming with ideas and can give you the direction you need to make a hiring decision or to get to the next step of your wedding plans.

  3. What is your best insider tip for brides who want to get married in NYC? NYC brides are really lucky because they have the best resources in the world at their fingertips. Be creative! Challenge your vendors to create your dreams – most likely they can do it! I think giving yourself time to explore your options and enjoy your vendors – that’s a great tip. If your band plays at a blues club, go hear them. Meet your photographer at an art gallery. These artists are talented, and usually work well beyond the “wedding” scope. You’ll get to know and appreciate their talents, and they’ll be more invested in your wedding. Also, book hotel blocks, bridal and bridesmaid appointments, and stationery appointments early. It will probably result in some savings. Everyone likes to know their schedule ahead of time, and costs go up year after year. If you can book your vendors today for next year, do it! Finally, I think sharing your budget with your vendors will give you the best value, and save time. They know you’re interviewing competitors, so the risk of having them “rise” to your budget is slimmer. More likely, they’ll give you a proposal that best suits your needs.

  4. Is there a time of year when you think NYC is the most beautiful? I love NYC year-round and think that there are advantages to even the most commonly unpopular times of year (February, March and August). In the heat of summer a cool hotel ballroom is bliss. In the dead of winter a room with a view of Central Park covered in snow is unbeatable. Vendors usually have more time for you in the “slow” periods, and prices are usually a bit lower. New Yorkers’ social and business schedules are so packed – I love a wedding in the doldrums of February or March when even jaded city-folk are happy to celebrate your special day. And some of the most beautiful wedding photos in New York I’ve seen are in the middle of a snowstorm, rainstorm, or on a windy city street. I think there’s beauty to be found in our city every day – you just need the right photographer to capture it!

  5. What is most common question you get asked? I often get asked what my favorite fill-in-the-blank is. I think couples often are searching for the perfect venue, invite, favor, dress, band, etc. Most figure out that it’s all about what’s perfect for them. And what’s “perfect” today might not be ideal tomorrow — so live in the moment, follow your dreams and enjoy the moment.
