1. Collecting wedding photos: The first step is the the most critical, which is collecting wedding photos of the bride. Several angles are best. These help me get all the details I need to get started, such as beadwork, color, and accessories. I also work with images from the fitting or even websites featuring the gown and hairstyle, since these make great bridal shower gifts!

2. Pencil the fashion pose: Next comes penciling in a great fashion pose that works with the gown’s movement and also laying out all the fine details. The figure is the elongated fashion proportion seen on every design room wall.

3. Illustration: The illustration is done in several mediums – pencil, ink, colored markers and pencils, metallic pens, and white paint. These all come together, creating shimmer and various textures.

4. Mounting: Once finished, they get signed and mounted on artist backer board and set behind in a 12″×16″ silk white mat. They make the perfect first anniversary gift of paper or a gift for any occasion!

DEBI GRIFFIN, ILLUSTRATIVE MOMENTS
Debi Griffin is a New York based fashion designer, fashion illustrator, and artist. She grew up in Dallas, Texas, obsessed with bridal after Princess Diana’s wedding at the age of 7. She went on to attend art school at Pratt in New York for fashion design. While in college she interned with CFDA working behind the scenes at New York’s Fashion Week, as well as obtaining coveted design assistant position at Vera Wang. After graduation she continued at Vera Wang, then freelanced with Nanette Lepore, going on to spend 12 years at Amsale as senior designer. Sketching her way through years of collections, clients, celebrities, top bridal publications, and friends, Debi decided to offer the same luxury of high fashion illustration to brides everywhere.

LUXE ON THE FARM

If you’re a foodie and find yourself in New York, a visit to Blue Hill at Stone Barns is a must. This gorgeous Hudson Valley property thirty miles north of the city is not only a fantastic restaurant, it’s also a lovely farm that grows many of its own vegetables and raises some of its livestock too. It’s a tiny piece of rural paradise.

When Lori Schulweis, a producer on the “Live With Regis & Kelly” show, was planning her wedding to David Buder to be held at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, she approached me to design the invitations. I knew I wanted to have a lot of fun with this project, giving it a rustic-chic theme complete with little farm animals. To start, my team and I created hand-drawn illustrations for the save-the-date cards, making them resemble a Farmers’ Almanac cover as a playful tribute to the couple. The invite was then burnt into wood and sent in a matching box. We also incorporated as much food and garden imagery as we could to play up the luxe-on-the-farm theme. The escort cards consisted of 25 different hand-drawn seed packets depicting various herbs and veggies like basil and asparagus. The bellybands around the menus matched the guests’ produce so they knew which table was theirs. So clever, I loved it!

Since it’s almost Thanksgiving, I thought it would be fun to tie in Lori’s farm-themed wedding with the most foodie holiday of all. I hope the pictures of her big day will inspire you.
